Much thought and effort goes into the selection of vendors, but how much effort do you put into selecting an audit provider? Many potential clients begin their conversations with “We have tried third party auditors in the past…”

According to the Financial Times, we all chose the wrong career when we decided to be makers, doers and helpers. The big money is in moving money around, and the best salary deals in China are being given to deal makers right now.

Local Chinese and international financial services companies have benefited from the recent opening of the market. The foreign companies have arrived at a good time, with huge volumes of cash sloshing around in unrewarding bank accounts, or lying under mattresses. It’s the perfect meeting of supply and demand.

Just before Chinese New Year, I was in a Shanghai sales meeting where the owner of a European company was discussing post-holiday sales projections. The talk was all “new, innovative, out of the box”, but the walk was all about doing the same old thing only bigger and/or cheaper. I’ve been to this rodeo before. Some of the expensive new marketing initiatives put into place 6 months ago were about to whither and die.

If you are a straight-arrow manager trying some “out of the box” thinking in China you are going to need a strategy for gauging and recognizing success in the early stages. Most of all you need to avoid squandering your investment by pulling the plug too early.

Getting prepared for your annual audit inspection

All foreign invested businesses in China are required to prepare annual financial statements, including balance sheets and income statements for their annual Chinese audit. Such accounts must be in accordance with the Chinese accounting standards for business enterprises – there are now no differences between standards for domestic and foreign enterprises.
