To open restaurants in Shanghai, you’ve got two options:
1. Establish a wholly foreign owned catering management company.
2. Simply open a restaurant
If you want to franchise in Shanghai or intend to sell your restaurants in the future, option 1 would be fit for you, or you can simply open a restaurant. You don’t have to rent a room in an office block to have the catering management company established. For setting up a catering management company, a suitable place for opening a restaurant is sufficient. As soon as it’s established, you can start to open restaurants, bars or coffee houses as its branch companies. Since the catering management company, which is licensed to engage in investment consultancy, business consultancy, corporate management consultancy, catering (food, dessert, beverage, alcohol) already has most of the required licenses and permits for engaging in catering business, you don’t need to apply for them when you are opening branch companies. Before I went to China and HK the first time, a common recommendation for an “acceptable excuse” was: allergy! Not only for not having to join in the drinking thing, it also applies for those who are not sure about wanting to eat certain foods.
While the advice can be useful, you may reconsider whether you want to use it. It is probably true that this will avoid your host to lose face, but… for your host, having you as a visitor may be an excuse to take you and some of his staff out for dinner, drinks and to have some fun and a good laugh. I have been asked many times if Credit and Debit cards can be used in China. The simple answer is YES, in most cities. Hongkong should be no problem, Shanghai and Beijing also should not pose too many problems. Nanning, Guangzhou and similar cities also should be OK.
Tips…although your card will be chip and pin you will in nearly all cases be asked to “sign for” do not let it out of your sight.
They can be used in the majority of the larger hotels, but not all cards will be accepted, in my experience VISA appears to be the most readily recognised and accepted. Before you leave for China, notify your bank (for Debit card) and the credit card company that you will be in China on the given dates, they will then flag up your account and you should not have to many issues. You may also still find after your first attempt at using either they will still be declined with the message “refer to provider”. Do not panic just phone your Bank or card company at your earliest. Tips…So always carry your card and bank contact phone numbers with you and also the numbers to report lost or stolen card.
