Mainland Chinese stocks, saw their sharpest fall in a decade on Tuesday. In consequence –for the first time in history – global stock markets suffered heavy falls, sparked by fears that the authorities were planning a crackdown to cool the market’s exuberance, and weak US economic data triggered a sharp rise in risk aversion.

Leading emerging markets were among the hardest hit, with Turkish shares falling 4.5 per cent, Russia’s RTS index down 3.3 per cent and Brazil’s Bovespa index off 6.6 per cent. European stock markets also sold off, as did higher-risk debt markets. Fortunately Chinese stocks steadied Wednesday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ending the morning up 6.88 points at 2,778.67. (source)
