Dear Reader,
Those of you who visit our Web site regularly, probably noticed the large amount of guest blog articles we received last week for the China Expert Guest Blog. We would like to thank all the writers and we hope to receive as many stories next week!
Also, if you know somebody who has an interesting story to tell, feel free to contact us or tell him or her to contact us at any time. Like Stephanie Lie Sam Foek did a couple of days ago. She is a student at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, currently writing her thesis on the value of Guanxi in businesses. If you have a minute to spare, you can help her out by filling in her questionnaire at: www.chinasuccessstories.com/2007/06/06/guanxi-or-guangxi By doing so, Stephanie will give us the premiere of her analysis of the actual value of guanxi in business.
We hope you will enjoy this issue!
Kind regards,

Plenty of Space in Shanghai
Talent&Pro is a young and flexible Operational Consultancy agency that focuses on banks and insurance companies. It is an agency that, apart from providing high-quality services towards clients, is strong regarding the personal development and career opportunities of its own employees as well. Those employed at Talent&Pro are offered a two-year contract, with a one-off extension to five years, during which they receive all the space to prepare and shape their plans for the future. Basically just like Marco Hoekstra did it. With many years’ experience in banking and finance, he started out at Talent&Pro as operational manager in the Netherlands 7 years ago. Currently, with over 400 employees, Marco is focusing his attention on Talent&Pro China.
A born developer, Marco has great interest in fast economic development. After the Netherlands, Germany and the UK were conquered, it was the right moment to realize a new Talent&Pro branch in the Far East. “A place where the market is developing at top speed, where the hectic pace of the improving economy requires new strategies all the time, and where young, highly qualified individuals have a passion for internationalization…” Shanghai, China.

Surviving dinner & the drinks
Before I went to China and HK the first time, a common recommendation for an "acceptable excuse" was: allergy! Not only for not having to join in the drinking thing, it also applies for those who are not sure about wanting to eat certain foods.
While the advice can be useful, you may reconsider whether you want to use it. It is probably true that this will avoid your host to lose face, but… for your host, having you as a visitor may be an excuse to take you and some of his staff out for dinner, drinks and to have some fun and a good laugh. Your host may want to show off with you to the others at the table, but keep in mind: this is primarily to increase his own status.

Credit cards and Debit cards in Nanning China
I have been asked many times if Credit and Debit cards can be used in China. The simple answer is YES, in most cities. Hongkong should be no problem, Shanghai and Beijing also should not pose too many problems. Nanning, Guangzhou and similar cities also should be OK.
Tips…although your card will be chip and pin you will in nearly all cases be asked to "sign for" do not let it out of your sight.
They can be used in the majority of the larger hotels, but not all cards will be accepted, in my experience VISA appears to be the most readily recognised and accepted. Before you leave for China, notify your bank (for Debit card) and the credit card company that you will be in China on the given dates, they will then flag up your account and you should not have to many issues.

Misfortune in Chinese business start-up
At the end of 2005 we decided to start a factory producing our own designed educational resources for Primary Schools. I knew it would be difficult - but how hard could it be?
It all began when our Shenzhen based manufacturers of our own-designed education products, moved to a cheaper site some five hours from the Hong Kong border.
Quality and production literally died overnight.
After 1 year of attempting to get decent stock from them and almost losing my customers in the process, the decision was made to try and go it alone.

Important Issues in Entering China Market
Generally speaking, merchants from China deal with foreign trade according to international rules and regulations. Then different peoples have different customs and habits. This is the same case in their commercial activities. We suggest that you should pay more attention to the following issues when you start your business in China or trade in China.
1. Emphasis on research of macroeconomic environment, foreign trade development, and dynamics of market movement.
As you all know the importance of knowing the market of your product before you get into it, it is especially important in case of the Chinese market. Although everyone knows that China is a huge market in terms of population and territory, yet there is a great geographic difference in terms of per capita income and per capita consumption.
