Shamian Island 沙面
Locates by Pearl River, Shamian Island has had a shaky past. With Guangzhou authorities forced to surrender a permanent trading base to the then `hated barbarians’ (us) at the end of the First Opium War in 1841. Oh how they must have laughed as they palmed off a sandbar to the British and French. Now, however, Shamian still retains some of its former grandeur in the mansions which were the foreign residences, business premises, banks, and consulates. A line of bars and cafes on the southwest side of the Island serves modern expats and offer pretty views over the Pearl River. But be warned, dozens of small businesses close to the modern White Swan Hotel aim to entrap unbeknownst tourists who have boldly wandered from their group.
