Executive Summary:

Chinas compact fluorescent lamps industry is booming. Overseas shipments are projected to cross the2 billion mark by the end of 2007,with the combined export volume of CFLs and other hot cathode fluorescent lamps from January to April this year already up 42 percent from the same period in 2006.

The country has been registering double-digit growth for the past three years, averaging 35 percent since 2003.Last year, China shipped abroad nearly2 billion CFLs worth more than US$1.5billion dollars. This is a 43 and 62percent jump from 2005 export volume and value, respectively.

Asia, Central and South America, and North America are currently the largest markets for China-made CFLs, absorbing 70 percent of shipments. Aggregate exports to these regions last year rose 54 percent in terms of volume and 80 percent in value as suppliers responded to strong demand for the product. This is a result of the implementation of energy-conservation policies with provisions for the phasing out of incandescent bulbs.

Shipments to Central and South America have more than doubled in the past year. The region now ranks as the primary source of export sales, and is second only to Asia when it comes to volume. Asia remains the primary destination of China-made CFLs.

Despite a boost in shipments from large suppliers, the EU fell from its ranking as the second-largest market in2005 to only fourth last year in terms of sales, and fifth volume-wise. Many suppliers scaled back exports due to the anti-dumping duty the region imposed on China-made CFLs, and the implementation of the RoHS directive.

Makers plan to boost shipments to the EU once the anti-dumping measure expires as scheduled in August. The region is still considered a key market since shipments here generate better margins than products sent elsewhere.

The following are some of the other key trends we see in China’s CFL industry:
•  Many suppliers will increase their manufacturing capability in preparation for a surge in orders as more energy conservation policies encouraging the use of CFLs are implemented worldwide.
•  Prices will continue to rise incoming months due to the higher cost of raw materials. Most suppliers, however, will be limiting adjustments to within 5 percent to remain competitive. Several companies are also projecting minimal cost fluctuations during the period.
•  Makers will upgrade production and management systems to streamline operations. Many are also improving labor efficiency to boost competitiveness.

This report covers U-shaped, spiral, globe and candle, the four major types of CFLs manufactured in China. Product descriptions and the factors that determine quality and price are discussed in the Products & Prices section of this report.
