Once again, I’m in a factory working through production issues that would be impossible to solve over the phone, with email, or even with photographs. What’s the issue this time? Among other things, my primary task this trip is to define the factory’s actual capabilities compared with the overly-optimistic sales pitches presented in their brochures. Qualifying a factory is definitely something that you can’t do from across the globe or even from a great distance within the same country! Just remember, when this becomes the newest and best addition to the Olympics, you heard it here first: it looks like the Beijing 2008 Olympics are going to introduce tickling as an Olympic sport. Expatriates are a big part of the business life in China. They have brought a good amount of technology, management and practical knowledge to bear on the challenges that face China’s industrial base. In many ways you could say that they brought a new manufacturing platform to China and the economy has been at least partly built around it.

Picture Beijing in the early 1990’s: a strong visual presence of communism in the typical courtyard-style housing (12 families housed in a block built around a central yard), grey Mao suits everywhere, almost no neon advertising signs and only occasional cars and mini-vans on the streets. In those days there were two currencies: Yuan and FEC(Foreign Exchange Currency) available only to foreigners, with a lower exchange rate than Yuan (1$=8.9yuan, 1$=7.4FEC). Strong government control, exacerbated by the recent happenings on Tiananmen Square, meant that getting to know Chinese people was almost impossible - they were not allowed to enter hotels and so had no exposure to foreign goods and lifestyle, which were only available in hotels.
