I have been asked many times if Credit and Debit cards can be used in China. The simple answer is YES, in most cities. Hongkong should be no problem, Shanghai and Beijing also should not pose too many problems. Nanning, Guangzhou and similar cities also should be OK.
Tips…although your card will be chip and pin you will in nearly all cases be asked to “sign for” do not let it out of your sight.
They can be used in the majority of the larger hotels, but not all cards will be accepted, in my experience VISA appears to be the most readily recognised and accepted. Before you leave for China, notify your bank (for Debit card) and the credit card company that you will be in China on the given dates, they will then flag up your account and you should not have to many issues. You may also still find after your first attempt at using either they will still be declined with the message “refer to provider”. Do not panic just phone your Bank or card company at your earliest. Tips…So always carry your card and bank contact phone numbers with you and also the numbers to report lost or stolen card. In the 6 months I have been in Shanghai I have seen and heard many interesting things. This time a short story about buying power.
This week I was talking to a young guy who’s girlfriend is doing a study in the UK. When I asked if he would visit her in the UK he answered negative. He has possibilities to do, but refuse to because he is supposed to use this time for himself to increase his buying power…. When his girlfriend comes back he will get engaged with her and what is a future husband without enough buying power…. I have seen it before where a young guy quit his job because his girlfriend and family thought the job was not good enough for him to built up a successful career and thus to support his future wife financially. At the end of 2005 we decided to start a factory producing our own designed educational resources for Primary Schools. I knew it would be difficult - but how hard could it be?
It all began when our Shenzhen based manufacturers of our own-designed education products, moved to a cheaper site some five hours from the Hong Kong border.
Quality and production literally died overnight.
After 1 year of attempting to get decent stock from them and almost losing my customers in the process, the decision was made to try and go it alone. My English agent and his Chinese wife located the premises for me in Shenzhen. The Hong Kong based Engineer who had worked for the previous manufacturers and had left after the move, was recruited to run the factory. Generally speaking, merchants from China deal with foreign trade according to international rules and regulations. Then different peoples have different customs and habits. This is the same case in their commercial activities. We suggest that you should pay more attention to the following issues when you start your business in China or trade in China.
1. Emphasis on research of macroeconomic environment, foreign trade development, and dynamics of market movement.
As you all know the importance of knowing the market of your product before you get into it, it is especially important in case of the Chinese market. Although everyone knows that China is a huge market in terms of population and territory, yet there is a great geographic difference in terms of per capita income and per capita consumption. Generally speaking the per capita income of east coastal areas is greater than inner parts and even far greater than the west rural areas. Therefore the thorough market research is crucial in the decision making process of your China market penetrating strategy.
