Chinese Mutual Funds
I am interested in investing in mutual funds composed of Chinese growth companies. Can you recommend fund companies that specialize in Chinese mutual funds, and specific funds that have strong performance histories?
Thank you,
Alex Sedlecky

Alex,
The following keywords might be your interest:
JPMorgan JF China Fund - no.1
Baring Hong Kong China Fund - no.2
Tianjin TEDA Investment Holdings Co.,
ABN Amro TEDA Fund Management Co. (a M&A recently happened with this fund company)
A report dated this March said there are 58 Chinese Funds companies having total 341 Mutual Funds, had ever best return in 2007 (the biggest bull year for China stock market), well this year would be much different, some will loss.
As for funds performance data the best resource in China, I think, should be “MorningStar”.
“City of Funds” in China is Shenzhen, our company located city. Then Beijing and Shanghai.
Investing China needs a long term view and commitment, if you see today’s successful Fortune 500 companies in China. Good luck, have a productive return!

1.For overseas investors, you have the following option: a) buy H-share in HK market; b) Participate A-share through QFII fund managers; c) Buy A-share linked ETF in HongKong.
2. If you’re interested in particpating A-share directly (supposed you have RMB currency and no cross-border issues), Ryan’s list can be a reference. Please also note that they’re mutual fund co.s participating in public listed stocks or bonds only. For private growth company, you definitely need to go to Private Equity fund.

Lidi’s message is basically right, but foreign investors do have a 4th option - B-share market, traded in both Shenzhen (in HK$) and Shanghai (in US$). This is the most direct and less complex way to invest stocks in China.

Ryan,
Thanks for your add-up. I didn’t put that on because B-share market is a relative small niche with old listed shares. I don’t think there exists growth companies except some M&A targets with limit liquidity. B-shares markets are definitely most convenient channel for overseas investors
