One of the most widely discussed subjects about doing business with Chinese people is the concept ‘Guanxi’. Uno de los más debatidos temas sobre los que mantenga relaciones comerciales con el pueblo chino es el concepto 'Guanxi'. Literally ‘Guanxi ’ means “being closed into a system”. Literalmente "Guanxi", "está cerrado en un sistema".

Not without reason, the term Guanxi often isn’t translated into English. No sin razón, el término Guanxi a menudo no se traduce en Inglés. In some occasions Guanxi is translated as ‘networking’, but that doesn’t really get to the deeper meaning of the word. En algunas ocasiones Guanxi se traduce como 'red', pero que realmente no llegar al significado más profundo de la palabra. While networking is based on knowing which person does what, Guanxi is based on the right to ask for a favour. Si bien la creación de redes se basa en saber que la persona hace qué, Guanxi se basa en el derecho a pedir un favor. Furthermore, Guanxi relates to someone’s background, work relations, family matters and relations that have nothing to do with friendship. Por otra parte, Guanxi se refiere a alguien del fondo, las relaciones de trabajo, los asuntos de la familia y las relaciones que no tienen nada que ver con la amistad. Being aware a favour from the other party can be asked for, is the essence of Guanxi. Ser consciente de un favor de la otra parte puede ser solicitado, es la esencia de Guanxi.

The foundation of Guanxi is the faith that one favour will be exchanged for another some day by each party involved. La fundación de Guanxi es la fe que un favor será canjeado por otro algún día por cada una de las partes involucradas. Therefore Guanxi is almost only used when favours need to be exchanged. Por lo tanto Guanxi es casi sólo se utiliza cuando se favorece la necesidad de ser intercambiados.

Friendship is just one out of many possibilities that allows one to ask favours. Amistad es sólo una de muchas posibilidades que le permite a uno pedir favores. The criteria that defines a good friendship, is the possibility to trust and rely on each other. Los criterios que definen una buena amistad, es la posibilidad de confiar y depender el uno del otro. The friendship created by ‘Guanxi’ is not in the least comparable to ‘networking’ as we know that in the West. La amistad creada por 'Guanxi' no está en lo más mínimo comparable al 'red' como sabemos que en Occidente. Guanxi based solely on friendship, will take years to establish. Guanxi basa únicamente en la amistad, se necesitarán años para crear. Businessmen who expect to create Guanxi by having dinners or spending time in Karaoke bars might create goodwill, but not Guanxi. Los empresarios esperan que la creación de Guanxi por haber cenas o pasar tiempo en los bares de Karaoke podría crear buena voluntad, pero no Guanxi.

Guanxi can develop when you help a Chinese acquaintance to get a visa in your country or when you provide a job to the child of a business relation. Guanxi puede desarrollar cuando usted ayudar a un chino conocido para obtener un visado en su país o cuando nos proporcione un empleo al hijo de una relación comercial. These examples create ‘light’ Guanxi. Estos ejemplos crean "light" Guanxi. The level of effort and difficulty determines the level of Guanxi. Needless to say, Western companies do not have a wide range of access possibilities for Guanxi at the first stages of doing business in China. Huelga decir que las empresas occidentales no tienen una amplia gama de posibilidades de acceso de Guanxi en las primeras etapas de hacer negocios en China. Also many companies are not familiar with the requests of those ‘favours’ that often don’t match the social accepted values of doing business in Europe. Asimismo, muchas empresas no están familiarizados con las solicitudes de los' favores' que a menudo no coinciden con los valores sociales aceptadas de hacer negocios en Europa. Recruiting employees with the right Guanxi is the fastest way of establishing a Guanxi network. That is why certain persons from a social network with a specific family background are highly wanted regardless their capabilities and qualifications. Best is to leave Guanxi up to your Chinese partners and employees. Mejor es dejar Guanxi hasta sus socios chinos y los empleados. They know the game and the right approach. Ellos saben el juego y el enfoque correcto.

For most foreign business people, being involved in general networking activities and relationship maintaining is more than enough. Para la mayoría de la gente de negocios extranjeros, participar en las actividades generales de redes y el mantenimiento de la relación es más que suficiente.
