In the Western world and especially in the Netherlands, open exchanges of view and fair discussions are very common. How different this is in the Chinese society. Como esta é diferente na sociedade chinesa. Any confrontation directly showing disagreement or questioning the things said, will be interpreted as if you have second thoughts about the other’s personal experience or worse, about the person himself. Qualquer confrontação directa mostrando desacordo ou questionar as coisas que disse, será interpretada como se tem segunda reflexões sobre a experiência pessoal do outro ou, pior ainda, sobre a pessoa. Chinese counterparts feel attacked by receiving comments, this is a cultural issue. Homólogos chineses se sentem atacados por receber comentários, esta é uma questão cultural. The term constructive criticism is therefore not very well known in China. O conceito de crítica construtiva não é, portanto, muito conhecida na China.

So, introducing any contradicting opinion is a sensitive matter in China. Por isso, introduzir qualquer parecer contradizer-se de um assunto sensível na China. Moment and situation are highly important factors that influence the outcome of your –probably- well meant remarks. When the expected result of a remark is uncertain or the timing isn’t perfect, we strongly advise to wait with providing feedback. - Realize your position towards your Chinese partner. -- Realizar a sua posição para com o seu parceiro chinês. In China seniority is valued more important than in the Western culture. Na China antiguidade é valorizada mais importante do que na cultura ocidental. A junior party seldom provides any comments at all. Um partido júnior raramente proporciona a todos os eventuais comentários.
- Try to discuss any sensitive matters privately and avoid bringing comments during a meeting or when third parties are around. -- Experimente discutir quaisquer assuntos sensíveis privado e não introduzir comentários durante uma reunião ou de terceiros quando estão em volta.
- Highlight the improvement following out of your remarks and also stress the personal advantages for the person related. -- Destaque na sequência da melhoria das suas observações e também de salientar o pessoal vantagens para a pessoa relacionada.
- Most important of all: smile when providing constructive critics. -- O mais importante de tudo: sorrir quando prestarem construtivo críticos. A nice smile always works. Um simpático sorriso sempre funciona.

Even when following these instructions it’s to be expected people will feel offended. Mesmo quando seguir estas instruções, é de se esperar que as pessoas irão sentir ofendido. A common reaction is denying responsibility or influence. Uma reacção comum é negar responsabilidade ou influência. The ‘circumstances’ are outside the range of the person abilities. As "circunstâncias" estão fora da gama de capacidades da pessoa. Just go along this line of argumentation. Basta ir ao longo desta linha de argumentação. Do not pretend these were all personal ideas, but try to find a connection with the (company’s) culture, laws, profit margins and topics that suit the situation. Although it may seem as walking on a thin line, a well considered pragmatic mentality in the Chinese society will get you much further than the Dutch no-nonsense attitude. Embora possa parecer como caminhar sobre uma linha fina, assim considerado um pragmático mentalidade na sociedade chinesa vai chegar muito mais longe do que os holandeses não-disparate atitude.
