Buying Power
By Marco Hoekstra
In the 6 months I have been in Shanghai I have seen and heard many interesting things. This time a short story about buying power.
This week I was talking to a young guy who’s girlfriend is doing a study in the UK. When I asked if he would visit her in the UK he answered negative. He has possibilities to do, but refuse to because he is supposed to use this time for himself to increase his buying power…. When his girlfriend comes back he will get engaged with her and what is a future husband without enough buying power…. I have seen it before where a young guy quit his job because his girlfriend and family thought the job was not good enough for him to built up a successful career and thus to support his future wife financially.
Young guys in China do not have it very easy when it comes to relations. A lot is expected from them and they seem to try to comply to the rules. Getting money is so important for them. Without money, no status and nobody to take you seriously and… no beautiful girl(s)…
In an environment like Shanghai it is also not so strange. You see so many new, modern and expensive things, but can also see the more old and less developed area’s, everything next to each other. So if you are walking on the streets just ask yourself what do you want…? The rapid developments have also made that many people grew from having nothing to having everything, so examples enough that if you want everything still possible is in China.
At the start of the new year, they also give new year wishes, “gongxi facai” It means something like “lots of fortune, lots of financial success, lots of money”. So I guess for now there is nothing left for the young Chinese man in Shanghai to pursue a fast career and/or start their own business (because many do both at the same time..) and create buying power…!!
